Toyota RAV4 vs Vanguard: what’s the difference?
The Toyota Vanguard (2007–2013) is a longer, Japan-only version of the third-generation RAV4 (XA30). They share engines and most parts — the Vanguard simply offers more room and an optional third row of seats.

Same engines and running gear
Both use the 2.4-litre 2AZ-FE petrol engine, in 2WD and 4WD versions (RAV4 ACA31/ACA36, Vanguard ACA33/ACA38). In Japan, the Vanguard was also sold with a 3.5-litre V6 (GSA33) — very quick, but thirsty.
The differences
- Size: the Vanguard has a longer wheelbase and body, so there’s more room in the back and a bigger boot.
- Seats: the Japanese RAV4 of this generation seats five; the Vanguard came with five or seven seats.
- Engines: only the Vanguard offered the 3.5 V6 in Japan.
Can you still import one?
No. Both stopped production before 2019, so under KEBS’s eight-year rule they can’t be imported in 2026 — you’ll only find locally used ones. For an ex-Japan import, look at the newer RAV4 (XA50, 2018 onwards) or the Harrier.
What to check
The 2.4-litre 2AZ-FE in both is known to burn oil as it ages, so check the oil level and look for blue smoke. As locally used cars, check the suspension, look for accident repairs and do an NTSA search.
Models this applies to
- Toyota RAV4 — 169 hp, 2019–2021
- Toyota Harrier — 149 hp, 2014–2019
Frequently asked questions
Is the Toyota Vanguard a 7-seater?
Some are: the Vanguard was sold with five or seven seats. The Japanese RAV4 of the same generation seats five.
Can I import a Toyota Vanguard in 2026?
No — the Vanguard was built until 2013, so it falls outside the eight-year rule. Only locally used Vanguards are available in Kenya.
Which is better, the RAV4 or the Vanguard?
They’re mechanically the same. Choose the Vanguard for more space or seven seats, the RAV4 for a slightly smaller, nimbler car — and buy on condition and history.
