Toyota Axio vs Fielder: what’s the difference?

The Axio and the Fielder are the same car underneath — the Corolla sold in Japan, sharing engines, gearboxes and most parts. The difference is the body: the Axio is a four-door saloon and the Fielder a five-door estate (wagon).

Same engines, same running costs

Both use the 1.5-litre 1NZ-FE (later the 2NR-FKE) with a CVT, and both came as hybrids. Fuel consumption is almost identical, ground clearance is the same, and parts are cheap and everywhere for both.

Where they differ

  • Body: the Axio is a saloon with a separate boot; the Fielder is a wagon with a large, flat load area and rear seats that fold down.
  • Space: the Fielder carries luggage, school gear or business goods far more easily.
  • Engines: the E160 Fielder was also offered with a 1.8-litre engine and sportier grades; the Axio stuck mainly to the 1.5.
  • Price: a Fielder usually costs a little more than a comparable Axio.

Which should you buy?

Choose the Axio for commuting, a tidy town car or ride-hailing; choose the Fielder if you carry luggage, a family’s gear or goods for a business. Mechanically, either is one of the most dependable cars you can buy in Kenya.

Which is more fuel-efficient, the Axio or the Fielder?

They use the same engines, so fuel consumption is almost identical — the Fielder is a little heavier. The hybrid versions of both are the most economical.

Are Axio and Fielder parts the same?

The mechanical parts — engine, gearbox, suspension and brakes — are shared, so both are cheap to maintain. Body panels, lights and the rear section differ.
