Nissan X-Trail T31 vs T32: which should you buy?

The X-Trail is one of Kenya’s favourite family SUVs. The two generations you’ll find most often are the boxy T31 (2007–2013) and the rounder, more refined T32 (2013–2022).

X-Trail T31 (2007–2013)

The T31 is boxy and practical, with a 2.0-litre MR20DE or 2.5-litre QR25DE petrol engine, a CVT on most automatic versions and ALL MODE 4x4 on four-wheel-drive versions. In Kenya it’s now available only as a locally used car, which makes it cheap — but check its history carefully.

X-Trail T32 (2013–2022)

The T32 is quieter, smoother and better equipped, with the 2.0-litre MR20DD direct-injection engine and a CVT. Some versions have a third row for seven seats, and a hybrid was offered from 2015. Late models first registered in 2019 or later can still be imported from Japan.

Which should you buy?

  • Tight budget and rough roads: a well-kept T31 4WD is tough and cheap to buy.
  • More comfort, safety equipment and seven seats: the T32.
  • Either way, the CVT is the part to check — see our guide to Nissan CVTs.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, the X-Trail T31 or T32?

The T32 is more refined, better equipped and can have seven seats; the T31 is boxier, simpler and cheaper. Condition and the health of the CVT matter more than the generation.

Can I still import an X-Trail T31?

No — it was built until 2013, so it falls outside Kenya’s eight-year import rule. T32s first registered in 2019 or later can still be imported.

Does the X-Trail have a CVT?

Most automatic X-Trails of both generations use a CVT. Check the fluid history and test it carefully — see our guide to Nissan CVTs.
